No power crisis looming – GRIDCo allays fears

The Ghana Grid Company Limited, GRIDCo, says the country has not returned to the days of severe erratic power cuts otherwise known as ‘dumsor’.

This comes after several parts of the country have been plunged into darkness several times in the last few weeks.

GRIDCo, in attempts to take away the fears of citizens, has explained that the power outages are only a result of some temporary challenges in the power supply chain.

The Corporate Communications Manager of the company, Ebenezer Amankwah, has assured Ghanaians of the company’s commitment to improving consistency in power transmission.

“First of all, let me just allay the fears of Ghanaians about the possible resumption of the dumsor period we experienced some years back. Dumsor is not back and I want to emphasize that,” he stressed in an interview with Citi Business News.

“There continue to be some challenges in the power supply chain because we work with machines and infrastructure and as and when they happen, our responsibility is to ensure that we are able to keep the system back up in terms of trying to make adjustments here and there until such a time that the issues are resolved. And that is the commitment that we have as a key member of the power supply value chain to ensure consistency,” he added.

For some weeks now, different parts of the country have been experiencing power cuts, with the most recent one happening on Wednesday morning.

According to the Ghana Grid Company Limited, the closure of an emergency valve at the West Africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo), is to blame for Wednesday’s power cut.

This incident and the previous ones have caused Ghanaians to take to social media and other platforms to raise concerns about the possible return of dumsor, with some demanding the release of a load-shedding timetable.

GRIDCo in a statement called for calm assuring that engineers are currently on-site working to restore gas supply and ultimately get the affected parts back on the grid.

Prior to this, the company had given a similar excuse for power cuts last week.
